Set in the 23rd century, Star Trek follows the original USS Enterprise crew, led by Captain James T. 'Star Trek' premiered on NBC in 1966.

Shatner led the crew in the original Star Trek series before making his final appearance as Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek Generations, the franchise's seventh feature film. He remained active in the decades that followed, pursuing projects in acting, writing and working as a recording artist.

Years after the series ended, Shatner made headlines again when he became the oldest person at the time to cross the Kármán line at age 90 during a Blue Origin New Shepard flight.

"When I was there, everything I thought might be clever to say [about the trip] went out the window," said Shatner. "Everything else just stood still for a moment. I was overwhelmed with the experience, with the sensation of looking at death and looking at life. It's become a cliché of how we need to take care of the planet, but it's so fragile."

He was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant melanoma in 2023. Two years later, Shatner sparked concern after reports claimed he had been hospitalized for a medical emergency. His agency, TalentWorks, quickly denied the reports, calling the alleged hospitalization "false."

Shatner has been married four times: to Gloria Rand from 1956 to 1969, Marcy Lafferty from 1973 to 1996, Nerine Kidd from 1997 to 1999 and Elizabeth Martin from 2001 to 2020.

Although Shatner and Martin finalized their divorce, they later reconciled and moved back in together.
