Kanye West took to Twitter earlier this week to share his strong views on recording contracts and music ownership, and he chose an interesting way to make his point.
In a since-deleted tweet — which was posted on Monday, September 14 — the rapper announced that he will not be releasing new music until his contracts with Sony/ATV Music Publishing, and his label, Universal Music Group, are finished.
The 45-year-old continued his Twitter rant on Wednesday, September 16, by sharing screenshots of his contract with Universal Music Group. "I need every lawyer in the world to look at these," the Grammy winner wrote. "ALL THE MUSICIANS WILL BE FREE."
To really show his passion and drive to grant "all the musicians" their freedom, the fashion designer posted a video of himself peeing on one of his 21 Grammy Awards, which was placed inside of a toilet. "Trust me … I WON’T STOP," he captioned the clip.
"The artist deserve to own our masters … artist are starving without tours … Ima go get our masters … for all artist … pray for me," he added. West even asked frenemy Taylor Swift — who publicly feuded with Big Machine Records last year after they sold her masters to Scooter Braun — Drake and Kendrick Lamar to join him in fighting this battle. "We need you right noooooow," he begged.
"90% of the record contracts on the planet are still on a royalty — A standard record deal is a trap to NEVER have you recoup, and there’s all these hidden costs like the 'distribution fees' many labels put in their contracts to make even more money off our work without even trying," West explained.
West was supposed to release his 10th album, Donda: With Child, over the summer, but it never dropped. The debut date would have come just days after his presidential campaign rally in South Carolina — where he broke down in tears and revealed he and his wife, Kim Kardashian, considered aborting their oldest child, North West.
During his meltdown, the troubled rapper continued to reveal that he had been trying to get a divorce from the KUWTK star for nearly two years and that the SKIMS designer had tried getting him professional help. West also called out his mother-in-law, Kris Jenner, during the rant.
West later apologized to the reality star for airing out the dirty laundry on the internet. While the 39-year-old was on the verge of ending their marriage, she decided to give it one last chance after embarking on a family getaway with their kids — North, 7, Saint, 4, Chicago, 2, and Psalm, 15 months.
"She went to their Wyoming ranch, where Kanye was staying, and said she couldn’t live like this anymore and that it would be better for everyone if they went ahead and got a divorce," an insider told OK!. "He begged her not to do that; they were both in tears. He finally suggested they go away for a while with the kids —and that time together made all the difference."
