Meg Ryan Is Back! Rom-Com Star Reveals Why She Took a 'Giant Break' From Hollywood
Why is Meg Ryan making her comeback?
“The tingle,” the rom-com sensation admitted in a new interview, referring to what her daughter Daisy calls the warmth she gets after a feel-good movie. “It’s the cutest thing.”
“That feeling at the end that just makes you feel your heart open,” the 61-year-old added.
The actress took a step back from Hollywood in recent years, with her last movie releasing eight years ago.
“I took a giant break because I felt like there's just so many other parts of my experience as a human being I wanted to develop,” she said, adding that she wanted to focus on raising her kids, Daisy, 18, and Jack, 31.
“It's nice to think of it as a job and not a lifestyle. And that is a great way of navigating it for me," she noted.
Almost a decade later, Ryan has decided to return to the big screen: the mother-of-two starred, directed and co-wrote the upcoming rom-com What Happens Later. The story follows the blonde beauty alongside David Duchovny, whose characters get snowed in at an airport.
"It came to me during lockdown," she shared. "The essence of it is these two people who are stuck together. I just love that idea that we’re held in a space, even if it feels conflicted, maybe for reasons that heal them."
Ryan described the flick as “magical. It’s a little roller-coaster ride between these two people, and it asks the question in a way: Will they or won’t they end up together? These are people who broke one another’s hearts way back when. And I think what they gained is that they have gratitude for that.”

When asked whether she believes things happen for a reason, the star referenced rom-com legend Nora Ephron.
“In retrospect I feel it’s true, yeah,” she replied. “The movies I did with Nora had an operative thing about kismet, like destiny and fate. And there’s something really comforting about that.”
As OK! previously reported, a source recently dished about how Ryan felt living life out of the spotlight.
"Meg enjoyed her time away from Hollywood and was happy to not have to deal with all the BS that comes with being famous," they spilled.
