Author Michael Wolff blasted First Lady Melania Trump for leveraging her public role to generate more than $17.2 million in private income.
Speaking on the “Inside Trump’s Head” podcast, Wolff characterized her lucrative arrangements as "unprecedented.”
He argued that there has "never been a situation like this" where a First Lady effectively turned her official position into a private "money machine.”
'This Is Extraordinary'

Michael Wolff slammed Melania Trump after her reported $17 million in earnings as first lady.
"This is extraordinary," Wolff said. "Among all of the extraordinary things in the Trump administration, among all the norm-breaking, this one is right out up front."
The $17.2 million figure was officially revealed in President Donald Trump’s mandatory annual financial disclosure report filed with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics.
Wolff also pointed to Melania’s frequent absences from the White House, saying, "She doesn't do anything as the first lady. What are the two roles of being the first lady? To sort of be a model of domestic propriety at some level, and support good causes. Well, she's clearly not a model of domestic propriety, and the cause that she supports is...her own business interests."
She has spent fewer than 14 days at the White House since the start of her husband's second presidential term in January 2025.
How Did Melania Trump Earn $17 Million as First Lady?

'She doesn't do anything as the first lady,' Michael Wolff snubbed.
The income was routed through her company, MKT World LLC, and includes $10.71 million in licensing fees from Amazon MGM Studios for her documentary, Melania; $6.01 million in digital sales from limited-edition Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs); and $521,161 in Royalty proceeds from her best-selling memoir, Melania, published by Skyhorse Publishing.
Critics and Democratic lawmakers have raised scrutiny over the commercial documentary and digital token sales, questioning whether they create conflicts of interest or trade on political influence.
Wolff pointed out that she operates completely outside traditional norms, opting to live primarily in New York City rather than in the White House, while maintaining a virtually nonexistent East Wing staff.

Michael Wolff called out Melania Trump's limited public appearances as first lady.
According to reports on Wolff's commentary, Melania's independent wealth-building has sparked some unease within the Trump administration.
Because Donald famously demands the spotlight, her high-profile business success reportedly puts her in direct conflict with a president who dislikes being outshone.
This criticism is the latest chapter in a long-standing legal and personal feud between the First Lady and the biographer.
Melania Trump Threatened Michael Wolff With $1 Billion Lawsuit Over Epstein Claims

Michael Wolff previously filed a preemptive lawsuit against Melania Trump over Jeffrey Epstein claims.
In late 2025, Wolff filed a preemptive lawsuit against Melania after her lawyers threatened him with a $1 billion libel suit over his public statements regarding her alleged social ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
A federal judge ultimately dismissed Wolff's lawsuit in May 2026, labeling it an abuse of the Declaratory Judgment Act.
Following the dismissal, Melania's legal team has continued to seek financial sanctions against Wolff.
