'Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear' Documentary: 10 Biggest Revelations

The ups and downs of Travis Barker's life are the focus of the new Hulu documentary, Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear.

Debuted on August 13, Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear follows the Blink-182 drummer as he "embarks on a raw and redemptive journey" after the 2008 plane crash that nearly killed him.

"Once a trash collector in Laguna Beach, his life changed when he stepped in as a replacement for Blink-182's drummer — igniting a meteoric rise that would make him the driving pulse of a generation," the official synopsis adds. "Yet beneath the spectacle of fame, the film reveals a complex man battling pain, grief and the thin line between survival and surrender."

Barker's documentary also features appearances from Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, Shanna Moakler, Tommy Lee and Questlove, as well as a posthumous cameo from the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.

Here are the biggest revelations from Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear.

Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear took a deep dive into Barker's complicated family history and his childhood in Fontana, Calif.

In the Hulu show, the 50-year-old drummer revealed his father left the family after cheating on his mother but soon returned when she was diagnosed with Sjögren syndrome. His mother died on September 3, 1990, a day before Barker started high school.

"Before my mom passed, we found out my dad was in a relationship with another woman, which made it even more difficult," he said. "He was spending a lot of time with her, and then coming back and staying with us when we needed him. I resented him, for the obvious reasons."

Barker continued, "There wasn't that one stable foundation to go to and be like, 'Yo, this is difficult for me.'"

In one part of the documentary, Barker admitted that his fear of flying began long before the 2008 plane crash, noting he had struggled with it since childhood.

On September 19, 2008, Barker — despite his fear of small planes — boarded a private jet bound for Los Angeles with his friend Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein, his assistant Chris "Lil Chris" Baker, his bodyguard Charles "Che" Still and co-pilots James Bland and Sarah Lemmon.

"The plane attempts to take off to go in the air and then we'd go down, go in the air and go down," Barker recalled. "We end up hitting an embankment and it was just fire and chaos everywhere. I couldn't go in front of me. So I went to the side of me."

The twin-engine Learjet plowed though airport antennas and a fence before crossing a five-lane road, killing four people. Barker and Goldstein were the only survivors.

Barker said, "I tried to make my way in front but the lower parts of my arms caught fire. I went to the emergency exit and I opened it. I jumped out right into the jet where all the fuel is. Then my whole body caught on fire. I'm running, and the fire just won't go out. Maybe 10 seconds later, the plane blows up."

The fatal plane crash left the musician with third-degree burns on 65 percent of his body, requiring him to undergo 27 surgeries. He spent three months in the hospital and had to learn how to walk again.

Nearly a year later, Goldstein died from an accidental drug overdose at the age of 36.

"I felt like I was in Final Destination, and I was next," Barker said while opening up about feeling survivor's guilt.

The trauma also led his refusal to be apart from his kids, Alabama Barker and Landon Barker.

"I would sleep in Landon's bed, and then Alabama's bed. I would go back and forth," Travis said. "I was with them everywhere I went. [My kids] were the best thing for my recovery."

The superstar drummer revealed his anxiety around air travel eventually led to substance abuse. When a friend initially gave him a pill to calm his nerves before flights, his use quickly escalated from "one or two pills" to a dependence on painkillers just to function.

Then, at the height of his addiction, Travis was taking "about 20 to 30 pills a day."

"I would take Oxycodone to the point where I felt like I was melting," Travis said. "I was self-medicating because I was having to fly almost every day and be away from my kids. I was taking so many pills that I had a security guard whose only job was to watch me sleep and make sure I was still breathing."

He added, "I started thinking I might be hitting a place where I needed to go to rehab. There was this huge desire to just quit everything."

Travis has since become sober.

Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear also reexamined Travis' first marriage to Melissa Kennedy, which lasted from 2001 to 2002.

His nonstop touring schedule with Blink-182 later put a strain on their marriage. After a major argument, he reportedly realized their relationship was no longer working, prompting him to return to Los Angeles, where, he said, life "just kept getting crazier."

Travis' second wife, Shanna, also made a brief appearance in the documentary, reflecting on their marriage from 2004 to 2008.

After going through two divorces, Travis found love again with Kourtney.

In the documentary, The Kardashians star recounted meeting "very gentle and quiet" Travis. The couple began dating in 2021 and tied the knot in multiple high-profile wedding celebrations in 2022.

Six months into their relationship, Travis and Kourtney were so happy when they found out the reality TV star was pregnant.

"Then, we go to the doctor, and the doctor tells us the baby doesn't have a heartbeat," Travis said of the baby, whom they named Tulip.

Kourtney expressed, "When we lost the baby, we were devastated. We just laid in bed and cried for days. All we wanted was to have a baby together."

While continuing their efforts to have a child, Travis and Kourtney underwent five IVF attempts in just eight months.

"It messed with me, mentally," she said of the procedures. "I remember crying to Travis, 'I can't do this anymore.'"

Kourtney also remembered her husband telling her, "If God has a baby in store for us, it will happen naturally."

They eventually decided to pause IVF before conceiving their son, Rocky, naturally. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians alum underwent an emergency fetal surgery a month before their son was born.

Elsewhere in the documentary, Kourtney reflected on helping Travis overcome his fear of flying.

During a breathwork session before their 2021 Mexico trip, she reportedly had a "vision" of his late mother, who appeared to thank her for looking after Travis.

"This sounds crazy, but during my breathwork, a vision of his mom came to me and said, 'Thank you for taking care of my son,'" she said.

In another part of Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear, Taylor made a posthumous appearance and reflected on meeting Travis during his "humble beginnings."

"He was a trash man, literally. Just trying to f------ make something happen," the late Foo Fighters rocker said. "It was like, 'Oh, you're gonna get picked up by a band, eventually – and you will be the star attraction in that band.'"
