Why Did Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Move Back to the U.K.? Inside Their Return After 2020 Exit

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are officially back in the U.K.

Multiple news outlets, including CNN and BBC, confirmed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex privately flew into the country from California with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

According to The Telegraph, the family arrived at Birmingham Airport around lunchtime on August 26. They did so without close police protection after being denied a taxpayer-funded police escort to their new home, instead relying on their own private security team.

Harry and Meghan did not disclose the reason for the shocking move, but their return came after People reported the family-of-four would relocate to the U.K. for an "extended amount of time" following Harry's visit to King Charles III weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a source told The Sunday Times the royal couple could become "private royals-plus" who would join working royal members at select family events.

"It needs all sides to agree a template for 'private royals plus.' It needs them to be much more 'private' than 'working,' and be seen at family occasions, like Christmas at Sandringham," the source said. "That requires [Prince] William and Catherine to say 'yes please' and how on earth does that happen? Just saying it out loud sounds implausible."

However, the insider warned that Harry and Meghan could also face strict boundaries regarding their business activities while in Britain.

"They’ll also be watched like hawks for anything that looks like they’re trying to monetize their brand," the insider added. "The feeling has always been they can do that in [their home in] Montecito, but not here."

The source said bringing their California business model to the U.K. could spark further tension, explaining, "If they come over and do the Montecito playbook — doing deals and making money — in the Cotswolds … that’s not going to go down well."

Harry and Markle's move back to the U.K. is believe to be temporary, though The Times reported Archie and Lilibet are expected to start school in the country in September.

"They had to wait to be told whether or not their children had got in [to school] — just like many other people waiting in mid-August," an insider said. "They weren't able to confirm their plans until very late in the day, because the school works to their own timetable. There was no special treatment."

As OK! reported days before the Sussexes arrived in the U.K., the couple had "secured a private, non-royal home" ahead of their return. Details about the residence were kept under wraps and were not disclosed "for security and privacy reasons."

At the same time, Harry and Meghan were reportedly exploring properties in the Cotswolds, including a luxury estate said to be listed for "£12 million, or around $16 million."
